MERCHANT'S LOGGIA
Remarkable Renaissance loggia housing grains and instruments to weigh them.
This Renaissance loggia is remarkable. It was built between 1503 and 1505 by Cassiano da Fabriano and Matteo Sabatini, and wanted by the cardinal Alessandro Farnese (future pope Paul III) whose arms can be recognized in the lilies sculpted on the capitals. The portico was intended to house the grain and the instruments for weighing it. It is here that one reached the rooms reserved only for the merchants of the Court. It is worthwhile to stroll around and observe the architectural details that date back to the 16th century.
