This former Ottoman fortress (Тетовско Kале/Tetovsko Kale, Kalaja e Tetovës) stands on Balltepe hill, 803 m above sea level and some 250 m above the town. It was built between 1795 and 1843 by the governors Rexhep Pacha and his son Abdurrahman Pacha, who were responsible for major works on the Colored Mosque and the Arabati-Baba tekké. The fortress is poorly maintained. However, portions of the walls and vaulted stone passages have survived. Above all, it offers beautiful views of Tetovo and the Šar mountains.
