CARNAVAL DE STRUMICA

The tradition of carnival is well anchored in the Macedonian-Macedonian culture. And that of Strumica, which takes place in February in the week preceding Lent, is one of the oldest and most famous in the country. It is indeed attested in a text dating back to 1670 and is even part of the European Federation of Carnival Cities (FECC) since 1995. As is often the case for this type of event, Strumica Carnival is a beautiful part of satire and social criticism. A challenge that expresses all the better since the face of the participants is covered with a mask. But if they sometimes represent local or international news, many of these masks are inspired by the ancient monsters and deities of the dionysiaques celebrations. This carnival continues to be dominated by old agrarian traditions and cults linked to fertility and the renewal of seasons.
