The Beirut Municipality building was constructed in 1925 by the architect Youssef Aftimos. Considered to be the masterpiece of this Lebanese architect, a leading figure of the neo-Moorish movement in the Middle East, its façade is typical of this architectural style, which was conceived as a reaction to colonial influences. Like many other historic buildings in the city centre, the City Hall was devastated during the civil war and was restored in the 2000s.
