Hirata is an important pilgrimage site in Lebanon. Located above Jounieh, at 650 m above sea level, a huge statue of Mary, called «Notre-Dame du Lebanon», or «the Virgin of Lebanon» was inaugurated in 1908. The panorama is amazing. Inside the pedestal on which the statue rises is a small chapel. A few metres from the Virgin is a huge concrete basilica. Slightly below, a very beautiful Greek-Catholic basilica with the yellow domes also overlooks the bay. The main party is the first Sunday in May. It marks the beginning of the pilgrimage season. In September 2012 Pope Benedict XVI came to Hirata.
