HAMMAM AL-JADID
At the end of the souk in the direction of the Taynal mosque, we arrive in front of Al-Jadid Hammam. Above its large portal, there is a large chain of stone (qu metal). Founded in 1740 by the Ottomans (the governor of Damascus, Assad Pasha el-Azzem), he has been in operation for 70 years. It is possible to visit it. To ask the merchants in the ruelle, one of them will have the keys. The entrance is free, but you will probably be asked for a small ticket if you visit. The hammam is impressive by the variety of domes and carrelages. The volumes are remarkable. It is said that there would be an underground that connects this hammam to the citadel Saint Gilles. By leaving the steam bath, you must lift your head to see the mosque al-Moallaq (the mosque suspended). It was built in Ottoman times above the shops of the Souk. A little further, the Tahham mosque, of mamelouke origin, is also built above shops. His minaret is remarkably sculpted.
