SILK MUSEUM
While silk activity has completely disappeared from Lebanon since the 1970 s, it must be noted that the silk trade accounted for more than 60% per cent of Lebanese exports in 1914. This museum is a tribute to the golden age of this activity in Lebanon, which had its best years from 1861 until the First World War. The activity took place during the Second World War. Silk was very much requested by the English army in particular. Located in an old, perfectly renovated house, this museum covers the different stages of the sericulture. A pleasant garden surrounds the museum, ideal for a drink. We appreciate the calm of the site just a few minutes from Beirut. A very educational and pleasant visit that can please both small and large.
The residence belongs to Georges and Alexandre Asseily who fell in love in 1966. So in ruins and abandoned, they had a real stroke of heart. They buy it in 1973 from the Fayad family. With the civil war, their project to reside is handed over. Finally, it was only in the late 1990 s that a renovation project started with the help and support of friends of the couple. The terraces are furnished, the garden is planted and the buildings are rehabilitated. In 2001, the site hosted for the first time the public, during the "Silk t-she" symposium.
