THE HERMEL PYRAMID
Perched in the middle of an arid plain stands a pyramidal building 27 m high, erected on a quadrangular basalt base. This pedestal has three steps and is about 8 m wide. This pyramid, whose vocation remains uncertain, is said to be the burial place of a Syrian prince (probably a Seleucid satrape) from the 1st or 2nd century BC. Beautiful sculptures - representing hunting scenes (several types of animals are visible) - stand out on its lower part (the eastern face of the monument remains the best preserved), while a pyramid surmounted by pilasters, partly reconstructed, surmounts its upper part. From this site at the top of a small hill, the view is splendid. Since the beginning of the Syrian crisis, the authorities have abandoned this pyramid: the monument is therefore in a lamentable state and covered with graffiti...
