DEBBANE PALAIS
The Debbané palace is one of the sites you should visit during your stay in Saida. Built in 1721 in the form of a tower (Bourg Ali) by the Hammoud family, originally from Morocco, this 1,500 m² residence was bought by the Debbané family in 1800. Damaged and ransacked by hundreds of refugees and militiamen during the war, it was renovated and retains all the characteristics of Arab-Ottoman architecture: reception rooms, mosaics and carved wooden ceilings. A beautiful staircase with a neo-baroque wooden handrail, accompanied by an aviary, gives access to the floors which are additions dating from the beginning of the 20th century with a strong western influence.
On the third floor, a room called tayara offers a splendid view of the ancient city of Saida and the Castle of the Sea. A small brochure full of information is given at the entrance. The Debbané family (important local merchants and industrialists) wish to convert the palace into the historical museum of Saïda. The museum has just opened, even if the reception was not yet ready when we were there: indeed, the electricity was not working...
