THE 1996 MASSACRE MEMORIAL
After crossing the centre of Qana and seeing a enchevêtrement of cars in narrow streets, you will come to the memorial of the massacre of 18 April 1996 adjacent to the United Nations post. It consists of a cemetery and a small museum. The site reports the massacre of Lebanese civilians and United Nations soldiers. While the Lebanese militia of Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel, the Israeli army undertook, for 16 days, the operation entitled «The grapes of wrath», which moved over 35 000 Lebanese out of their village. In the face of the bombing of Israeli aircraft and Naval Artillery, the population of Qana, mainly children, women and the elderly, had fled to the barracks of the United Nations. On 18 April, several Israeli rockets destroyed some of the barracks, killing 107 people. Subsequently, Israel asserted that Hizbullah soldiers were present in the base and that it did not know the presence of civilians.
