ARCO DI AUGUSTO
Triumphal arch with a frieze representing the scene of the ritual sacrifice of the alliance.
The triumphal arch in white marble from Foresto, one of the best preserved in Italy, dates back to 8 BC. An inscription along the Gallic Way recalls the reason for its construction: the sealing of the alliance between Rome and the local populations of Celtic origin, led by King Cottius. A frieze represents the scene of the ritual sacrifice of the covenant: sacrifice of the ram, the bull and the pig. Passing under the arch, the walk continues in the Parc d'Auguste, which overlooks the Porte de Savoie at this point.
