FORT CHABERTON

The highest fortress in Europe is only accessible by a 5-hour hike.
Built in 1898 to defend Italy's western border. The peace treaty of 1947 awarded the ruins of the fortress and a large part of Mont Chaberton to France. The small houses and the remains of the rusting cannon shafts were completely demolished in 1957. Today, only the ruins of its 8 towers bear witness to what was once Europe's tallest fortress. It can only be reached in summer via a 5-hour hike, although a visit to the interior is not recommended due to the poor condition of the ruins.
