ROMAN THEATRE
Impressive facade of a Roman theater near the Praetorian Gate in Aosta.
Near the Praetorian Gate, in the archaeological area, stands the facade of the Roman theatre ofAugusta Praetoria, 22 m high. This imposing building was built in the 1st century AD and could accommodate between 3,000 and 4,000 spectators. It fell into disrepair for a long time and only attracted the attention of historians in the 19th century. Today, it is a majestic straight wall with buttresses and arcades and windows. The cavea (the part reserved for the public) and the foundations of the rooms dedicated to the actors are still recognizable.
