PRAETORIAN DOOR
A remarkable gate from the Roman period, an eastern entrance to the city of Augusta Pretoria.
The eastern entrance to the city ofAugusta Pretoria, this massive gateway built in 25 BC is the largest remaining from the Roman period. It consists of two parallel curtain walls into which a large arch for the passage of chariots and two smaller ones for pedestrians opens. The outer fronts were covered with marble slabs, fragments of which can be seen. On the north side there is a Romanesque tower with a square plan, the former residence of the lords of Quart. It was here that the bishop of Aosta was paid the toll for the goods imported into the city.
