A cooperative that maintains the tradition of lace embroidery in Cogne.
This cooperative maintains the tradition of lace embroidery in Cogne. The fairy-like hands of the lacemakers wield the drum and bobbins (up to 88 of them!) with fascinating skill. The practice dates back to 1665, when Benedictine nuns fled the monastery of Cluny and took refuge in the Val d'Aoste. They were welcomed in certain villages and taught the women the art of bobbin lacemaking. Annual production is around 1,500 meters of lace.
