Practical information : Accomodation Milan
Budget & Tips
In Milan, your main budget will be spent on accommodation. If possible, avoid the periods around Fashion Week or the International Furniture Fair, when prices rise sharply. For a double room in a youth hostel, budget €60 to €120 (€25 to €30 in a dormitory). For a 2-star room, expect to pay €80 to €150, and €120 to €200 for a 3-star room. A 4-star room will cost between €180 and €250, and a 5-star, more than €300. For an agriturismo in Lombardy, expect to pay between €80 and €90. Tourist tax must be added to the price of your room.
Tourist tax rates per night and per person (2024) : Camping, youth hostels, 1-star hotel, 2-star residence: €2.50; 2-star hotel, 3-star residence, case per ferie: €3.50; 3-star hotel, 4-star residence, bed and breakfast: €4.50
To be booked
During major trade fairs and exhibitions, accommodation prices can vary by a factor of four. For example, during the Salon International du Meuble, in the first week of April, it's almost impossible to find a room for less than €200. The same applies to the fashion show weeks in early September and early February. So it's best to avoid these few days, or book your accommodation well in advance.
What's very local
From youth hostels to grand hotels, the classification is more or less the same as in France. Outside the urban environment, theagriturismo formula is widespread. This Italian particularity could be compared to the French gîtes ruraux. These are agricultural farms offering rooms and very often catering based on their own produce. Fewer in Lombardy than in other Italian regions, you'll find them in the countryside around Pavia (l'Otrepò) or near Mantua.
For food lovers
In Italy, breakfast is sweet and generally consumed as quickly as possible. However, hotels used to welcoming an international clientele always offer a buffet with sweet and savoury dishes. Smaller hotels offer coffees and cappuccinos with brioches, plain or stuffed croissants, but not necessarily ham or cheese. Remember to ask for them in advance if you want them.
Smokers
Smoking is forbidden indoors in Italy as in France; ask when booking whether smoking is permitted in your hotel room.
