ARCO DELLA PACE
Monumental arch, symbol of the hazards of history, started by Napoleon in 1807 in Milan.
At the entrance to Parco Sempione, this monumental arch is a symbol of the ups and downs of history. It was begun by Napoleon in 1807, at the same time as the Foro Bonaparte, and is located on the Milan-Paris axis. The Emperor of Austria, the Habsburg Francis I, finished the work by dedicating it to peace after 1815. Its three gates bordered by four massive Corinthian columns are surmounted by the statue of an impressive six-horse chariot. Bas-reliefs were originally intended to illustrate Napoleon's victories; the subject was replaced by episodes from the Restoration.
