STATUA DI SAN CARLO
Colossal statue, the highest in the world, offering a beautiful view of the lake
On the hill (one of the Italian sacred mountains) that dominates the city, the colossal statue of Charles Borromeo (colloquially called Carlone, "Great Charles"), completed in 1698, stands 24 m (and 11 m pedestal) tall. This statue remained the tallest in the world until Bartholdi's Statue of Liberty was completed. Moreover, the French sculptor used the same technique of embossed copper plates, used here for the first time. The interior is accessed by a staircase that leads to the top of the statue from where there is a beautiful view of the lake.
