MUSEO DIDATTICO DELLA SETA
Museum that shows the history of weaving and silk manufacturing in Como.
Much more interesting than one might think, the Como Silk Museum is nestled on the first floor of the Faculty of Textile Design, from which the best fabric designers for the major fashion labels graduate. In 1985, the Class 27 associations and the school's alumni began collecting materials from local silk factories, gradually creating the basis for this eco-museum.
Opened in 1990, it bears witness to the history of silk weaving and manufacturing, an industry that made the city famous in the 19th century. Then, after the war, production gradually declined.
The museum grew as its collections were enriched. Today, on more than 1,000m2, the tour develops through the different stages of production. After an introduction to silkworm rearing, the visitor discovers the ancient machines and utensils used for weaving, dyeing, printing the patterns and finally the fixing process. Some of the machines, such as the hand looms and the cylinder printing machine made of wood and finely engraved copper, are exceptional pieces of industrial archeology.
The museum also offers temporary exhibitions, which complement the permanent collection. Note that young people with a passion for this world have the opportunity to do a civic service at the museum. Not to be missed if you want to learn everything about this art form.
