TORRE VISCONTEA
Symbol of the walled city, known as the medieval tower in Lecco.
Also known as the medieval tower, it is today the symbol of the walled city. Until 1782, the town of Lecco was entirely fortified by an atypical triangular-shaped wall. It was the Austrian Emperor Joseph II who ordered its destruction as part of an urban renewal. The only surviving tower was the former keep of the fortress built by Azzone Visconti in the 14th century. Prison from 1816, it was not until the 1930s that the tower became a museum; today it is an art center.
