MONASTERO VILLA
Villa preserving the collections and furniture that belonged to the last two owners.
Villa Monastero stands on the site of the former female Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria, founded probably before the 13th century by a group of nuns fleeing the island of Comacina after its destruction by the Comasques. By decree of Pope Pius V, dated February 13, 1567, the convent was suppressed, and the buildings and land were subsequently acquired in 1569 by the Mornico family of Cortenova in Valsassina. In 1645, Lelio Mornico completely transformed the old convent into an elegant villa. The 19th century saw a succession of owners and, in the second half of the century, the villa underwent grandiose restorations. At the end of the century, the German W.E.J. Kees purchased the property. He embellished the garden with decorative elements and numerous exotic species from the Far East, in keeping with the taste of the time. Confiscated in 1918, the villa was bought in 1925 by Dr. Marco De Marchi, who donated it to the Italian state. Since 1996, it has been managed by the Province of Lecco. Today, the villa preserves the collections and furnishings that belonged to the last two owners, who were also responsible for the building's final refurbishment.
The park, which runs alongside the lake for over a kilometer, features rich flowerbeds laid out along small paths that lead to the shore. Tall cypress trees, palms and other exotic plants surround the villa, which is wonderfully set against the splendid backdrop of the lake.
