Since 1954, the Municipality of Florence, in collaboration with the Società Italiana dell'Iris, has organised an international iris competition every year. This is a floral exhibition in homage, of course, to the fleur-de-lis, symbol of the Tuscan capital. The Giardino dell'Iris of the Michelangelo piazzale forms a pleasant green space, a real oasis coloured by more than 2,000 kinds of irises, judged during this competition by an international jury.
