CENACOLO DI SANT'APOLLONIA
In the refectory of the Benedictine convent of Sant'Apollonia, a superb fresco by Andrea del Castagno is available free of charge.
The cenacle is just one part of what was once the Benedictine convent of Sant'Apollonia, home to the largest number of nuns in Florence. The first foundations date back to 1339, followed by the construction of the Renaissance refectory in 1445. Ironically, it wasn't until 1860 that Andrea del Castagno's magnificent fresco of the Last Supper, dating from 1447, came to light! A masterpiece ignored by the sisters for over four centuries.
