In 393, Florence received the visit of Saint Ambrogio, Archbishop of Milan, who consecrated the church of St. Lawrence (the first cathedral) and named San Zanobi as the new Florentine bishop. This name Zanobi, of Greek origin, indicates that the christianization of the former Roman colony was mainly held under the influence of intermediaries, from the eastern merchants. A new cathedral was built under the impetus of San Zanobi, dead in 429, which was named Santa Maria Reparata.
