CHIESA SAN SALVATORE IN OGNISSANTI
Church known to be the last residence of the painter Botticelli and his muse Simonetta Vespucci.
The monastery and the church of All Saints(Ognissanti) were rebuilt by the Franciscans in the 16th century. The church was then transformed in the eighteenth century in a baroque style. If this church is not the most famous of the city, it is however known for being the last home of the painter Botticelli and his muse, Simonetta Vespucci. Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, known as Sandro Botticelli (which means "small barrels"), rests in the chapel of St. Peter of Alcantara, located on the right transept, under a round tombstone with the name of Sandro Filipepi.
In the right aisle, above the second altar, there is a fresco by Ghirlandaio, the Madonna of Mercy, from 1470, which shelters the members of the Vespucci family with her mantle (they are buried in the second chapel on the right). There is a young man in a red suit, between the Madonna and an old man; he represents Amerigo Vespucci, the famous Florentine navigator, who served the Medici family. Also not to be missed, between the third and fourth chapels, a magnificent fresco, Saint Augustine, signed by Sandro Botticelli. This fresco represents Saint Augustine to whom appears Saint Jerome. The latter is painted in the fresco by Ghirlandaio that faces him.
Finally, and few people know this, the crypt of the Ognissanti church houses the tomb of Caroline Bonaparte (1782-1839), Napoleon's youngest sister, widow of Joachim Murat, and Queen of Naples.
