MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE DI FIRENZE
National Archaeological Museum of Florence, preserves a remarkable Etruscan collection and an extraordinary Egyptian section
The National Archaeological Museum of Florence (MAF) is housed in the superb Crocetta Palace, built in 1620 by Giulio Parigi, then owned by Princess Mary Magdalene of Austria. Don't miss this exciting museum, which is one of the most important archaeological museums in Italy. It was founded just after the Franco-Tuscan expedition of Champollion, the famous French hieroglyphic decipherer. It was then inaugurated in 1870 by King Victor Emmanuel II, when Florence was the capital of Italy.
The museum houses a remarkable Etruscan collection and an extraordinary Egyptian section, the second largest on the peninsula after Turin! Steles, pottery, jewellery, bronzes, fabrics, precious stones, statues and many other pieces... The route follows a chronological itinerary, from Prehistory to Roman times. A must see during your visit: the Egyptian and Etruscan sarcophagi and cinerary urns (the latter were very present in Tuscany). Also, do not miss the attic crater with black figures, called Vase François, a real jewel, as well as the very famous and impressive Chimera d'Arezzo, discovered in 1553. The museum also has a Greco-Roman section which includes marbles and bronzes.
In addition, the choice of temporary exhibitions offered by the National Archaeological Museum of Florence is often worth a visit.
