Piazza della Signoria is the most important place in Florence in centuries, especially from a political point of view. The many statues that populate this famous square and the loggia make it a true museum of outdoor sculpture.
In the Plaza de la Señora, stands the Palazzo Vecchio, one of the most beautiful examples of medieval public architecture (1299-1314), from which stand out the 94 metres of the Arnolfo Tower (view of the city, with access to the Salle dei Gigli). In front of the palace, the symbols of the Free Republic of Florence warn visitors. Here, the city is powerful. The Marzocco, Donatello's heraldic lion, symbolizes the power and freedom of the town. It also features Judith, also from Donatello, and a copy of Michelangelo's formidable David. On the other hand, Baccio Bandinelli's Hercules and especially Bartolomeo Ammanati's Neptune Fountain (1563) also represent the power of the Medicis. Towards the centre, the monumental equestrian statue in bronze of Cosme I, the work of sculptor Giambologna.
Faced with so many certainties and challenges accumulated by the municipality, do not forget, by avoiding passers-by who trample on it without noticing it, to meditate on the commemorative plaque materializing the location of the pyre of vanities, erected in 1497 by the Dominican brother Girolamo Savonarole. He burned all the books he considered unworthy of reading there and, ironically, he himself was reduced to ashes the following year.
