SALVATORE ROMANO FONDAZIONE
One of the most important religious and artistic monuments of Florence, decorated with a grandiose fresco by Andrea Orcagna
The Augustinian complex of Santo Spirito is one of the largest religious and artistic monuments in Florence and was purchased by the commune in 1868. The museum has its seat inside the old cave of the convent. It is decorated by a grandiose fresco of Andrea Orcagna representing the Crucifixion and the Centenion (of 1365). In this vast space, the sculptures bequeathed to Florence in 1946 by the antiquarian Antiques Salvatore Romano, a small - but well chosen - collection covering the ages ranging from the preromane era to the xve. Romanesque sculptures are the rare copies of this period in Florence. The most representative works are the Cariatide and the Angel in adoration of Tino di Camaino, the Virgin to the child of Jacopo della Quercia and two bas-reliefs representing Saint Prosdocimo and Saint Maxime, from Saint Antoine Basilica in Padua.
