BADIA FIESOLANA
Former Benedictine abbey, the most important in the Florence area, in San Domenico, near Fiesole
Former Benedictine abbey partly renovated by Cosme de Médicis, known as Cosme l'Ancien, in the 15th century. It has a very beautiful Romanesque façade with geometric motifs, in white and green Prato marble, unfortunately unfinished, dating from the 11th century. The interior, with a radical stripping that only the pietra serena can bring to life, is characteristic of the first Renaissance. Residence of the Bishops of Fiesole, it is the most important religious building in the surroundings of Florence that is said to stand at the place where Saint Romulus was martyred.
