BATTISTERO SAN GIOVANNI IN CORTE
Elegant baptistery with Gothic structure and polychrome marble facing the cathedral in Pistoia
Facing the cathedral stands the elegant baptistery with its Gothic structure and polychrome marble covering (the green marble comes from the neighbouring town of Prato, the white marble from Carrara). The carved wooden entrance portal is overlooked by statues and bas-reliefs forming an admirable decorative play. Founded in the 14th century by the Sienese Cellino di Nese, it has an octagonal plan and houses a baptismal immersion tank, a rare object attributed to Lanfranco da Como.
