MUSEO DELL'OPERA - FACCIATONE
Museum exhibiting many original works from Siena Cathedral, including a collection of sculptures by Giovanni Pisano.
Founded in 1869, the prestigious Musée de l'Œuvre is one of Italy's oldest private museums. On three floors, it exhibits numerous original works from Siena Cathedral, including the ten statues on the façade by Giovanni Pisano, sculpted between 1285 and 1297. Duccio di Boninsegna's famous Maestà (1308-1311), a Byzantine-influenced masterpiece, is also on display. Or the Beato Agostino Novello by Simone Martini, the Birth of the Virgin (1342) by Pietro Lorenzetti, and many other artists of the Sienese school. Also not to be missed is the Madonna degli Occhi Grossi by Maestro di Tressa, one of the oldest paintings of the Sienese school, dating from the 13th century. In short, a very interesting museum to visit!
Access to the Museum of the Opera is via the right nave of the Duomo Nuovo (New Cathedral), whose construction, begun in 1339, was interrupted by the terrible plague epidemic of 1348. Indeed, the relatively serene era of the Nine came to an abrupt halt with the outbreak of the Black Death, which killed more than half of Siena's population in the summer of 1348... This building is the result of a project to extend the cathedral that never came to fruition. From the top of the facciatone - vertigo-sensitive souls beware! -After climbing 147 steps (yes, we counted!), you can admire the superb view of the cathedral, the city and the Sienese countryside.
