PINACOTECA NAZIONALE DI SIENA
The National Picture Gallery presents a collection of a wide panorama of the incredible artistic production of Siena
The National Gallery of Siena has occupied the Brigidi and Buonsignori Palaces since 1932. Its collection presents a wide panorama of the incredible artistic production of Siena, from the 12th to the 17th century, with works by Simone Martini, including her famous Virgin and Child, Duccio di Buoninsegna, brothers Lorenzetti, Domenico Beccafumi, Francesco di Giorgio, Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, known as Sodoma, Pinturicchio, and many others... Priceless treasures, including the most beautiful collection of "gold background" paintings in the world. Among the masterpieces on display, the wooden altarpiece entitled Mystical Wedding of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, Saint John the Baptist and Saint Anthony (1420) by Michelino da Besozzo should not be missed. Look carefully, the Child Jesus passes a symbolic ring to Catherine of Alexandria, under the perplexed eyes of Mary.
Although unknown to the general public, Sienese painters revolutionized painting in the 14th and 15th centuries. Their avant-garde and refined art, Florence's great rival, has made Siena one of the most successful artistic centres of the Renaissance. This art gallery helps to understand how these major artists revolutionized painting, thanks in particular to Duccio.
Chronologically, we advise you to visit first the second floor, then the first and finally the third. The visit ends with a room dedicated to sculptures, which offers a picturesque view of the rooftops of Siena.
