CATTEDRALE SANTA MARIA ASSUNTA
Romanesque cathedral of Volterra whose ochre stone façade hides an interior bathed in light and decorated with works of art
Behind the Palazzo dei Priori, the Romanesque cathedral of Volterra dates from the 12th century. Its ochre stone façade hides an interior bathed in light and decorated with works of art: a polychrome wooden deposition (13th century), an alabaster ciborium by Mino da Fiesole and frescos by Benozzo Gozzoli. Opposite, the baptistery of San Giovanni, built in 1283, contains the baptismal font by Andrea Sansovino, a Renaissance sculptor. Next to it is the oratory where the history of the Mercy of Volterra is recounted.
