MUSEO ETRUSCO GUARNACCI
Museum that exhibits pieces that go from Prehistory to the imperial Roman period, like the collection of black ceramics.
Originally constituted by the funds bequeathed by the collector Mario Guarnacci (XVIII century), the collection of this museum has made the fame of Volterra for its splendor and its cultural and artistic value. The exhibits range from prehistoric times to the Imperial Roman period and were found during archaeological excavations in the area (especially in the Enrico Fiumi archaeological park, where the remains of the Etruscan-Roman acropolis are still visible).
Of particular note is the collection of bucchero, a typical black Etruscan ceramic, as well as the admirable bronzes and the cinerary urns in tuff, alabaster and terracotta. In room XX, the most fascinating object of the museum, and of Etruria in general, is probably the sculpture representing a young boy, dating from the third century B.C., called by Gabriele d'Annunzio l'Ombra della Sera, because its stretched body (characteristic of Etruscan votive sculptures) evokes the shadow of a figure at sunset. It is impossible not to feel something in front of this fabulous tension between the roots of the earth and the sky, source of many legends.
On the practical side, the "Volterra Card" allows you to visit all the cultural sites in the municipality of Volterra: Museo etrusco Guarnacci, Pinacoteca and Museo civico, Ecomuseo dell'Alabastro, Palazzo dei Priori, Area Archeologica del Teatro Romano di Vallebuona and Area Archeologica dell'Acropoli Etrusca. This cumulative ticket is valid for 72 hours and includes various other discounts and rebates.
