TEATRO ROMANO
Amphitheater witness of the glorious past of Volterra, located north of the city walls.
North of the city walls, this amphitheatre dates back to the time of Augustus, 1st century BC, and bears witness to the glorious past of Volterra, called Volaterrae by the Romans. In its semi-circular terraces that lay on the hill, the "Little Colosseum" could accommodate 2,000 people who came to watch games and fights by large gladiators. The remains of this Roman theatre, among the best preserved in Italy, were discovered in the 1950s. The stage wall and Corinthian columns miraculously stood the test of time.
