It is said that in 1668, at the place where a small temple had been erected and Pier Francesco Fiorentino (1444-1497) had painted a Virgin and Child two centuries earlier, the Blessed Virgin appeared to a deaf and dumb shepherdess and miraculously restored her sight and hearing. The Pancole sanctuary was destroyed by bombing during the Second World War, but the paint remained intact and a new sanctuary was rebuilt around it in 1949. It is located 5 km from San Gimignano, on Via Francigena, which connects Certaldo to the north.
