FORTEZZA DI MONTALCINO
An important example of military architecture, the fortress of Montalcino ( century) offers a magnificent view of the surrounding area.
Montalcino's pentagonal fortress was built in 1361 by Sienese architects Mino Foresi and Domenico di Feo. In a remarkable state of preservation, these imposing walls dominate the horizon and reflect the strategic position occupied by the town, located on the Via Francigena, which successively interested Siena and Florence. On the second floor of the keep, you can see the Sienese flag painted by Sodoma. A breathtaking view of the surrounding area, including the famous Brunello vineyards, can be enjoyed from the parapet walk.
