Cathedral symbolizing the power of Pope Pius II, built between 1459 and 1462
The cathedral, built between 1459 and 1462 by Rossellino, symbolizes the power of Pope Pius II. The sober travertine façade hides a bright interior (for Pius II, light was essential to beauty). Works by Lorenzo Vecchietta (Assumption of the Virgin - 1461), Matteo di Giovanni, Sano di Pietro, as well as a remarkable wooden choir from 1462. Note that the duomo follows the model of the Bavarian hall churches where the future pope was in charge of the Curia's affairs.
