PALAZZO PICCOLOMINI
Palace built by Rossellino, inspired by the Rucellai Palace in Florence, with a hanging garden in Pienza
Residence of the sulphurous Pope Pius II (member of the Piccolomini family, noble Sienese diplomats), this palace was built by Rossellino between 1459 and 1462, inspired by the Rucellai palace in Florence, characterized by the low relief of its pilasters and bosses. An elegant courtyard with Corinthian columns leads to the suspended garden where you can discover a superb loggia. We also visit the Pope's apartments and room. Paintings from 1650, coffered ceilings, trompe-l'oeil frescoes from 1700 and period furniture have remained almost intact.
