Administrative headquarters of the province, also known as the "red palace", the building is famous for its courtyard surrounded by arcades. Built in 1567, it dominates Piazza Aranci, so named because of the orange trees that lined it. 82 meters wide, the Ducal Palace is the most imposing monument in the square. When Napoleon added the Duchy of Massa and Carrara to the possessions of his sister Elisa Bonaparte in 1806, the sovereign decided to reside in this palace. In 1886 the obelisk in the center of the palace was erected.
