DUOMO DI SANT'ANDREA
Majestic cathedral in the heart of Carrara, famous for its black and white marble façade.
The impressive Romanesque-Gothic cathedral, dedicated to Sant'Andrea, was built entirely of marble, extracted from nearby quarries. Built in the 12th century, the Carrara dome was completed in the 14th century. It has a Pisan-style façade, also in marble, and decorated with a remarkable rose window. The white of the marble is skilfully streaked with bands of black Colonnata marble that reinforce the balance. The dome preserves frescoes and sculptures from the 14th and 15th centuries. Next to it stands the campanile, about 30 metres high.
