LUMINARA DI SAN RANIERI

During this celebration in honour of its patron saint, the city of Pisa is magically illuminated by candlelight alone.
This traditional festival is remarkable for its naval confrontation on the Arno River in the eight old districts of the Tuscan city. It is held in honour of the city's patron saint, San Ranieri, born in 1118 and died in 1161. This young monk led an exemplary life, notably by fighting in the Holy Land. When his remains were placed in the chapel of Pisa in 1688, the whole city was lit by candles. And it has been going on ever since. Pisa then appears in such a romantic light that you can only be advised to attend.
