ORTO BOTANICO
Beautiful botanical garden that offers a pleasant and peaceful breath of fresh air in the heart of Pisa.
The botanical garden, 3 minutes from the Leaning Tower, offers a breath of fresh air in the heart of Pisa. Considered the oldest in Europe, it was created by Como I de' Medici in 1543. An oasis forgotten by the public, yet rich in history, the University Botanical Garden of Pisa, which breaks with medieval gardens, allowed students to learn about the medicinal properties of plants. The plants, which came from the Pisan region and the Apuan Alps, were collected by Luca Ghini (1490-1556), the first director of the garden, a famous botanist and physician.
