BASILICA SAN FREDIANO
One of Lucca's oldest churches, famous for the mosaic decorating its façade.
This 12th century church, in the Lucquois Romanesque style, features a magnificent 13th century Byzantine mosaic representing the Ascension of Christ in the upper part of its façade. Its interior, humble at first sight, hides some treasures, including the baptismal font (12th century), the marble polyptych that covers Jacopo della Quercia's altar, the chapel of the Cross decorated with frescoes and an Annunciation in terracotta by Andrea della Robbia. The church also preserves the body of Santa Zita (1218-1278), saint of flowers and charity, patron saint of Lucca.
