CATTEDRALE SAN MARTINO
St. Martin's Cathedral, the center of Lucca's spirituality and an essential stage on the Via Francigena.
Dating from the 11th century, the dome is, along with Piazza San Martino, Lucca's cultural center. 13th-century bas-reliefsdecorate the exterior, including a Deposition from the Cross by Pisano. The interior, rebuilt in the 15th century, features the tomb of Ilaria del Caretto, a 13th-century masterpiece by della Quercia and a Last Supper by Tintoretto. The Tempietto houses the Volto Santo. The story goes that this crucifix was carved just after Christ's Calvary, and thus shows his true face. The towns of Lucca and Luni fought over the precious object, but in the end Lucca inherited it.
