PIAZZA SAN MICHELE
The square that formed the place of the meetings of the Consiglio Maggiore, the legislative body, bordered by the Palazzo Pretorio.
This beautiful square, the natural centre of Lucca, was built on the site of the former Roman forum. Until 1370, during the communal period, it was the venue for meetings of the Consiglio Maggiore, the legislative body. It is bordered by the Palazzo Pretorio or Palazzo del Podestat, from 1492, as well as by the church of San Michele in Foro, a superb example of Pisano-Lucquoise architecture, with its façade decorated with loggia (galleries) with rich decoration and a large marble statue of Archangel Michael. It is nice to come and relax over coffee or an aperitif
