FORTEZZA MEDICEA
Fortress built on top of previous constructions of the same type, established on the top of Prato in the north-east of the city
The Medicean fortress of Arezzo is an excellent example of 16th-century Italian military defensive architecture. It was built between 1538 and 1560 on top of earlier constructions of the same type, and is located on the top of the Prato, north-east of the town. It has suffered many assaults over the years. Among the last traces, those left by the attack of the French armies at the beginning of the 19th century are still visible on the western flank. From the watchtower, the view extends beyond the town to the Arno valley and the neighbouring mountains.
