Dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist, the current cathedral of Sansepolcro was built in Romanesque-Gothic style in the 14th century, on the site of a former Benedictine abbey dating from the early 11th century. Its sober facade is pierced by three box doors and an alabaster rosette. Inside, several works by artists such as Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci, known as the Perugino (Ascension of Christ), Bartolomeo della Gatta, and a wooden statue of Christ, dating from the 9th century, which is highly revered.
