FORTEZZA DEL GIRIFALCO
A huge fortress at 651 meters above sea level, on the hill overlooking Cortona, with panoramic views over the Valdichiana.
The presence of a fortress on the hill overlooking Cortona dates back to the 6th and5th centuries B.C., following the line of the town's Etruscan walls, still visible today. Captured and plundered several times during wars with the city of Arezzo, it was sold in 1411, along with the city of Cortona, to the Florentine Republic, which began renovating it in 1527. From the fortress of Girifalco, you can enjoy a superb panorama of the Valdichiana, a fertile landscape of plains described by ancient writers as the granary of Etruria.
