FORTEZZA VECCHIA
The oldest of the two Medicean fortresses of Livorno standing on the edge of the port
Fortezza Vecchia is the oldest of the two Medici fortresses in Livorno. This fortification, which stands on the edge of the port of Livorno, is well worth a visit. Of medieval origin, then fortified by the Medici during the 16th century, it summarizes the history of the city. There is a square medieval tower from the 11th century, now considerably reduced in height but still visible. The round tower, the highest, was built in the 14th century and served as a citadel to strengthen the city's defence system.
